 "Dead in 5 rounds!" 2009-07-22
By Steve Hryniuk (Hilo, Hawaii)
I bought this as a (requested) gift for girlfriend's birthday. It did well with cookies, it did well with bread dough, and well with various batters. But died in only 5 uses! White smoke of death escaped the motor housing tonight and I'm really sad to tell her what happened tomorrow when she wakes up.

I purchased mine from WM and it was on sale for less than a hundred. Deal was great then, sour now.

I would recommend against the Sunbeam cheapies (and all cheapies for that matter) and am looking to higher power / well reviewed models now. Amazon is the greatest!

Had it a year, it worked ok. But now, a screw has worked loose from the top part, and it prevents the head from tilting back. Total dis-assembly is required to fix this.

There is no excuse for a screw working loose! Bolt it, rivet it, pin it, or Loctite it! I'm handy, so I'll fix it, but anyone else would have to trash it.

The motor is beginning to smell as well. Can't recomend this machine, it dosen't last.

Replaces an older cheaper unit which was mostly plastic. This is much nicer; however, it is more expensive. You get what you pay for.

 "Just like old times!" 2009-03-24
By T. Garwood (Glassboro, NJ United States)
This mixer is the greatest. Had a Mixmaster from Sunbeam years ago and it lasted many years. When it finally gave out, everyone said to get a Kitchenade. We did and never did get used to it. After only a few years, but with a lot of use, it started to leak oil and sounded very bad. We wanted to try and go back to a Sunbeam. We looked at all the models and decided to get the better model with dual motors. It has been fantastic! Great mixing action, plenty of power and very familier to use. We're glad we went back to a Sunbeam.

 "piece of crap" 2008-12-04
By Jennifer Barr (PA United States)
I always thought Sunbeam was a great brand...that is, until I bought this mixer! Right from the get go it would over heat and smell like something was burning. I thought it had caught fire at one point because it was smoking!!! It quit working but then after it would cool down it would work again for maybe 10 minutes each interval. It died completely and had only lasted me a year and that was not even using it more then once every other month or so! It was a complete waste of money. I guess now days nothing is made to last like it used to be.

"KitchenAid in Disguise Try Bosch" 2009-07-11
By Emily Anderegg (Sandy, UT USA)
I grew up using my mom's Bosch for bread, but I have been using a basic Kitchen Aid for 7 years for all uses which yields 3 loaves of bread for me. I have been eyeing 7 qt mixers for 4 years now, but have not been able to justify the expense. Luckily we found this Cuisinart closer to $300 much more affordable. I initially wanted the Delonghi because the design was so striking. Unfortunately they aren't available anymore as Cuisinart has purchased and modified the model.

Experience: Made a batch of cookies. Used the paddle. Turned out beautifully. Could easily triple my recipe yield 5-6 dozen cookies. Tried making a 4 loaf yield bread recipe. Used the dough hook. I was able to mix up to 13 cups flour, but it didn't incorporate well. I ended up dumping dough out and incorporating remaining 2-3 cups of flour in by hand. By making a large recipe I noticed that the mixing attachments top off at 3/4 of the bowl depth, well below the top rim of mixing bowl, thus limiting capacity. I noticed on Kitchen Aids web site there 600 models boast 8 loaf yields.

Key Bonus Features: 1) I love that it fits underneath my overhead cupboards and lights. I can't fit my Kitchen Aid on the counter under the overhead cupboards since I installed counter lights. 2) I love the gradual speed control and the fold feature. I don't like how quickly both the Kitchen Aid and Bosh pick up and that they lack any slow speeds. 3) I like the timer to prevent over mixing, though I don't use it very often. 4) The attachment idea is appealing though I don't use any. Bosch has had the same concept for years with their Universal mixer/blender combo.

Key detractors: 1) The Cuisinart design takes away from the cosmetic sleekness of the Delonghi. Bummer. That's one of the reasons I wanted it initially. It looked so different and much cooler than Kitchen Aid. It appears as though Cuisinart is catering to Kitchen Aid users because the SM-70 looks like a mutated Kitchen Aid stand mixer, including the metal ring around the top and the horseshoe bowl harness. 2) You cannot mix 7 qts as the top of mixing attachments end about 1/4 below top rim of bowl. I poured in liquid and your actual mixing volume is about 5 qts before immersing the rotating stirring mechanism. This is however much more than I could do with my Kitchen Aid. Larger Kitchen Aids may hold more. Check the top level of the mixing parts to see how much you can actually fill the bowl. Maybe it is standard for stand mixer bowls to be larger than actual mixing capacity to reduce spillage, but a better design would reduce the percentage as much as possible. I can mix just over 5 qts in the Bosh and the beating mechanism is above the bowl rim. I also like the splash gaurd on the Bosch as you can make it a one or two piece cover. 3) The dough hook didn't seem to incorporate the flour very well. I ended up pouring dough onto counter and kneading by hand. Not a problem in the Bosch. 4) I don't seem to notice a real power different between the Kitchen Aid and this. They both seem adequate, but not overly muscular. Bosch seemed to handle the bulk of bread dough a little better. 5) The tall narrow bowl has some benefits and seems to mix well even at the bottom of the bowl with plenty of room to spare at the top for double batches, but to me I felt a little claustrophobic, trying to add ingredients while mixing and not getting them all over the place. With or without the splash guard, I felt there was limited space to try and get something into the bowl without actually tilting the head up. Maybe it just takes some getting used to after using wider bowls in both the Kitchen Aid and Bosch mixers.

Recommendations: 1) I would like to see them design a deeper mixing attachment so you can truly mix larger capacities up to top rim of bowl. Splash guard seems superfluous as you must keep mixture well below top rim of bowl so you don't immerse mechanism. 2) It would be nice to see the pour spout on the splash guard have a little wider and taller opening to accommodate larger measuring cups. 3) I would like to see them move the controls to the back of the machine as my counter space makes it easier for me to use the machine sideways and from the left side. The controls on the right side force me to use it the other direction. If the controls were on the rear then I could place it sideways on the right or left side of my counter without trouble and still easily see the controls. The splash guard can already switch from right to left so pour spout can be on either side. It's nice to at least have that flexibility.

It may well be the best option for larger capacity home use mixers, but if I had to purchase again, I would probably go with Bosch for larger bulkier jobs (larger capacity, great flour incorporation) and just use a hand mixer for cake batters and smaller jobs. If you decide to purchase it, save all of your packing materials and then try your largest recipes first to see if you can truly accommodate the larger capacity you envision and justify the expense. Then try to double or triple any recipes to see how far you can go. If you can't, return it. If you don't intend to make big batches of anything, don't bother with it at all and just stick with your old Kitchen Aid.

"Good tools is the rule." 2009-07-10
By Nicolette Plynton (Brooklyn)
After about 1 1/2 weeks of intensive research on the internet, in the restaurant supply district of NYC, I purchased this mixer. A litany

of evidence made this a practical obvious conclusion. A 7- Quart mixer,

under $400, easy to pick up and carry. Did I mention free shipping? Limitless possibilities with the pasta attachment (will order eventually), as well as the meat grinder. Affordable home-based creativity.

My other option was to drive out to NJ and pay about $750-$800 (+tax) for

an Omicron 10 quart....only about 200 lbs, an $8 toll, gas, 3 hours of my day, and oh yeah a friend and a dolly. The Waring and Hamilton Beach caught my eye at first. Guess what though? They are only 5 Quart mixers, they cost an extra $100-$150 and still do not have the Cuisinart parts & motor guarantee.

I dig it.

 "better buy than KitchenAid" 2009-06-25
By Mary Jo Atherton (Laramie, WY)
I had 3 KitchenAid mixers: the first one lasted 20 years, the next one was replaced in 6 months under warranty when the motor died, the motor on the other one died JUST OUT of warranty. Three repairmen told me not to bother repairing it because it wouldn't last. I replaced it with the Cuisinart SM-70 7 quart mixer.

Pro's: quiet, easily adjustable speeds, handy fold and timer features, deep bowl that doesn't splatter, works great on small or large amounts, all beaters can go in the dishwasher (unlike KitchenAid), doesn't jump around on the counter (unlike You-know-what),looks awesome on my counter.

Con's: I miss the handle of the KitchenAid (but not enough to spend another $500 on one that won't last!) and the bowl is deep and heavy for a short person with arthritic hands.

 "Awesome Stuff!!!" 2009-06-16
By R. WILSON (St Helens, OR)
I purchased this item for many reasons. 1 of course is the bowl size, 7 qts thats a large size for under a commercial use size. Also there is of course the 1000 watts so that it will not burn up as fast. There is also the time and the attachments. This product has performed to its the expectations that I had of the item and beyond, I definetely recommend this item to any looking for an industrial mixer that will work and work.

 "Mixed Comments!" 2009-07-23
By Camp Verde Library (Camp Verde AZ)
I bought this mixer on line to replace a 33 year old mixer that I lost in a fire. While it does do a great job mixing really heavy cookie dough, it is heavy, hard to operate, clumsy to fasten on stand, and worst of all, the eject button will not release both beaters without a struggle. My husband has a machine shop and with the aid of a plastic tap hammer was able to get the beaters out. It is a 'work horse' if that's what you need but I cannot recommend it for simplicity to use

This mixer worked very well at all speeds when I purchased it two years ago but the beaters were difficult to remove. Then after more use they finally released easily. This week they wouldn't release and had to be muscled out with wrenches. The next time I used it they wouldn't wiggle out at all and the mixer is going to the town dump ASAP. I'll never buy another West Bend.

I think it is important to understand what you are buying here when you consider this purchase. I've used this mixer about a dozen times now since December 2008 and have always been pleased with the mixing results. I mix things like cookie doughs and puddings. These seem like typical uses. The speed adjustment is not clincally accurate but, it does increase in speed as the nob is turned. The outer part is plastic chrome but it cleans up fine. The bowl's method of attachment to the turner leaves something to be desired but it works. So, in short, if you're looking for a device to mix most things with, I think this will suit you well.

 "Excellent Mixer" 2009-06-21
By drsmommy (Oklahoma)
I bought this mixer in lieu of a Kitchen Aid, mainly due to its flexibility. This mixer easily snaps together for use and easily breaks down for storage in a deep kitchen drawer. It is also lightweight, making it quite portable, but built so that it doesn't move all over the counter when in use. As far as use goes, it whips cream into butter without any effort or supervision on my part in about 15 minutes. I love that the bowls lock onto the base and cannot be easily shifted when adding ingredients to a batter. Overall, I have been pleasantly surprised with this purchase. I did not anticipate that I would like it better than my old Kitchen Aid.

 "Great for light duty" 2009-02-22
By M. R. Henderson (Indianapolis, IN USA)
We purchased this model to see if we would use it enough to justify getting a more expensive model. The unit performs well and we do not intend to replace it with a more heavy duty model since we do not use it that often. The motor seems to have enough power that it never bogged down or slowed down when we used it. I would definitely recommend this for people who don't know if they need the higher priced models and just want to use a mixer every once in a while.

My mixer arrived very quickly and I put to work. I have made zucchini bread, 2 batches of cookies, coffee cake, whipped cream and recently with my food processor, tomato juice. Now I just need more of the special attatchments such as the juicer and the meat grinder. I wish I could have gotten a black one but wasn't going to pay more for a cosmetic need. Wonderful mixer. I hope to get many years out of it and can pass it along in the family.

I have only owned my mixer for approximately 2 months, but so far it has proven to be awesome! I love the timer and the slow start. I would definitely buy this mixer again.

 "Out-standing mixer" 2009-07-04
By Neelie O'Keefe
The first one I ordered was shipped sideways and some of the machine oil had leaked from the middle attachment port on top. Amazon was terrific to work with and exchanged it without the slightest hassle. The timer is a little touchy and once didn't work at all. The recipe book has several typos and I've had mixed results with the bread and cake recipes. It would be helpful if Cuisinart included a guide to translating standard recipes into Cuisinart-friendly instructions, such as which mixing tool to use for what standard instructions and how to more exactly translate standard mixing speeds and times into the 12 numerical speeds of the mixer.

"Delighted with product, unhappy with Amazon :-(" 2009-07-01
By G. McDowell (Orange County, CA)
This is my first Cuisinart stand mixer having happily used KitchenAids all my life. After reading the other reviews of Cuisinart (and being extremely satisfied for decades with their food processors) I confidently ordered this from Amazon. I have been extremely satisfied with the quality and performance of this machine and I would rate it higher than the comparable KitchenAid plus the bowl is 5-1/2 quarts compared to the 5 quart KitchenAid. The top part lifts up very efficiently. The motor is rated much higher as well which would seem to give better torque although KitchenAid claims its smaller wattage is equal in power. It has lots of handy features including a folding button so the flour doesn't go flying all over. It also has an easy electronic timer so you can set the speed and the time and it will automatically shut itself off. The bowl cover however is more trouble than it is worth. The top of the machine cover has inserts for additional attachments but I don't have any yet. The bowl is very well designed and is easy to lock into the base but at $80 I am going to pass on a second one for the kitchen at least for now. There is a cook book pamphlet included which seems competent and a rather basic DVD. The Cuisinart has a longer warranty which is an additional assurance of quality. If you are considering a new stand mixer purchase (and you don't already have a bunch of expensive KitchenAid attachments) then I can fully recommend the Cusinart. It looks great, too - if only it came in Martha Stewart Blue.

Now shockingly after 10 years of completely happy experiences with Amazon - always expedient and efficient and they never leave you in the dark and my iMac has widgets which can track the UPS and FedEx packages in real time which is so handy - I was very unhappy :-( when I looked back on the product page and saw the mixer for $40 less from Amazon than I had paid for it and there was a free attachment offered as well. The price went down on the day that mine shipped (and my card was charged) and the free attachment was offered. Astonishingly Amazon does not have a price guarantee. I could have purchased this item at Macy's which is just down the street but for the same price I didn't have to lug it home. HOWEVER, Macy's would have guaranteed their advertised price reductions for 30 days - Amazon does not! After a couple back and forths with Amazon's Customer Service they politely informed me that their policy is to not guarantee the lowest price or price reductions. This was shocking to me. I could have returned mine and repurchased a new one with the lower price and the free ($110 attachment) but that would have been a lot of trouble. I am composing a letter to Amazon in which I state MY purchasing policy which supercedes their selling policy. Because of the convenience and trustworthiness of ordering through Amazon I frequently make purchases from them so I can have everything delivered to my door and usually at a lower price. This is my very first and only bad experience with Amazon (I am still satisfied with the mixer!) in all these years and I think in these times they need to change their policies to protect their loyal customers. My feelings got stepped on.

"Conclusions from My Research Comparing Kitchenaid 600 to the Cuisinart Mixers" 2009-06-13
By William Faulkner's Friend
I was in the market for a new heavy-duty mixer. I spent a good deal of time reading reviews and articles on the different mixer brands and models. It came down to the Kitchenaid Pro 600 (NOT one of the smaller Kitchenaids) versus one of the new Cuisinart 5qt or 7qt mixers. I inspected both models at the store. I was really torn between the two but finally decided to buy the Kitchenaid 600 mixer over the Cuisinart. In case anyone is interested, I thought I'd share my reasoning in the following bullet points.

1) First, if you look at these items on Amazon, both the KA and Cuisinart mixers share 4.5 star ratings. Almost all of those who owned one of these mixers without owning the other one seemed to have great things to say about the mixer they bought. So, I took this to mean that I really couldn't go wrong either way. However, I did know that I wanted either the 6qt KA or probably the 7qt Cuisinart because I like to make bread and also because I like heavy duty stuff!

2) Next, I was impressed by the longer 3yr/5yr warranty offered by Cuisinart. However, I think just about every review by someone who had problems with the Cuisinart REALLY complained about their customer service, shipping costs, and hassle of dealing with Cuisinart when something goes wrong. I think most of the KA owners were fairly happy with KA customer service, even if only a 1 year warranty. Either way, most of the people having problems with EITHER of these mixtures seemed to be those who wanted to knead a LARGE amount of dough, and I can't help but thinking they are trying to do too much with the equipment they bought -- they should buy a $1500 Hobart.

3) Kitchenaid's past problems with plastic gears caused me a little concern, but I read enough to know that this was a major issue for them a couple of years back, and that they had taken great pains to correct the problem -- so I discounted this worry.

4) Next, I checked out the Cuisinart 5qt at the store. The good things about it are the lower profile and the tilting mixer head -- giving you more clearance and maybe easier access to the bowl. However, there are a LOT of parts, electronics, springs, levers, etc. on this mixer!! In other words, a LOT to go wrong or break in my opinion. Plus, the digital controls seemed kind of flimsy plastic. Who knows, maybe I'm completely wrong here, but I couldn't help but doubt that the average Cuisinart is not going to make it many years without some issues. Since its only been out a year or so, it doesn't have a track record yet either. This factor swayed me toward the simplicity of the KA 600.

5) Further, as we looked at the Cuisinart model at the store we noticed oil leaking out of the mixer head onto the splash guard. What made this particulary disconcerting was that I had read at least two reviews on Amazon (or another website) where people mentioned having this exact same problem with their new Cuisinart -- they had to ship their mixer back East to get this taken care of. This just seemed like more than a coincidence to me, and was especially concerning since I doubt the unit at the store had ever been plugged in. Another point for the KA 600.

6) But Cuisinart's great review in the last Cook's Illustrated still almost swayed me to buy the Cuisinart. However, I went to the trouble of getting a subscription to CI to read the review. My impression from the review was that the main reason the Cuisinart was rated tops was due to all its features. However, I already explained my concern about all the stuff on the Cusinart. Moreover, the KA 600 is now ranked second only behind the Cuisinart, AND had been ranked no. 1 in the previous year review before the new Cuisinart came out. So, I decided to forget the review. NOTE: The Kitchenaid 5 quart mixers are not rated that well in CI for making bread since they are not powerful enough -- some reviews I read seemed to mix-up the KA 5qt review with the KA 600 mixer, but CI rated the KA 600 as doing fine for bread.

7) Anther factor I considered was the higher rated wattage of the Cuisinart motors. However I read a previous year Cooks Illustrated review that discussed how unreliable the wattage ratings for mixers are since the manufacturers use different methods for rating their mixer motors, and some mfrs intentionally use ways that make their mixers look more powerful even though they actually aren't.

8) Great attachments for the KA included an ice cream maker that is highly rated by reviewers. My KA 600 came with a rebate for a free one of these ice cream makers, so that settled it for me (even though I think I would have gone with the KA anyways).

Bottom Line: The simple utilitarian design of the KA eventually swayed me its way. The complicated mechanism, many parts, and unproven reliability of the Cuisinart scared me away. BUT, if you love the Cuisinart features and/or need a lower profile design, I'm sure its a great mixer. However, if you insist on overloading either one of them with too much dough, you are going to have troubles!!
