KitchenAid's stand mixer is a substantial piece of equipment: 300 watts of mixing power make child's play of creaming butter, kneading dough, and whipping cream. The kid in you will appreciate how quick and easy it is to mix up a batch of cookie dough; the 4-1/2-quart bowl can hold up to 8 cups of flour, which translates into as many as 192 sweet treats.

This model comes with three attachments: a flat beater for making batter, meat loaf, and all textures in-between; a wire whip for egg whites, mayonnaise, and more air-infused creations; and a hook for mixing and kneading yeast doughs. All three are solid in construction and easily secured to the beater shaft with a simple twist; untwisting them is a bit trickier because the attachment stems are short and can be hard to grasp, especially if they get the least bit greasy. This model also includes a pouring shield for guiding ingredients to their proper destination, and the bowl itself locks tight to the base.

Standing 14 inches high, jutting out a foot, and weighing more than a grown woman's bowling ball, this stand mixer isn't the sort of appliance you'll wipe down and put away. Better to find a square foot of free counter space for easy access; besides, this machine is as pretty as it is rugged--you'll want to show it off.

To complete the package, KitchenAid includes a spiral-bound guide with instructions, mixing tips, and 67 recipes, from crispy waffles to a caramel walnut banana torte. --Betsy Danheim

"the only mixer you will need in your lifetime" 2007-01-03
By Cathy S. Barczak (Michigan)
2 years ago my children gave me a kitchenaid for Christmas. You haven't lived until you have one!!!! Everything is so much easier to do with this appliance. Set it and let it mix. After my wonderful experience with this I decided to get my daughter and daughter in law each one for Christmas. They were excited beyond belief and can't wait to start using them. They both have young children that will grow up with them, hopefully the children will realize how important this appliance is when they grow up after using it during their growing up years. Absolutely would recommend this product to anyone.

 "Heavy duty workhorse" 2006-11-02
By C. Aurich (usa)
These mixers are used in manufacturing environments here and abroad for blending batches of textile-related chemicals for testing and quality control purposes.

They work well, last long, and do a difficult job under fairly severe conditions.

So it should work well in your kitchen, I think.

 "Working Again - Update" 2005-11-02
By 8AA2YM (Denver, CO)
See original text below. Just wanted to say this mixer is working great since the fix. We grind meat, grain and make our own pizza dough.

I love kitchen gadgets. This broken mixer (Broke after two uses) was handed down to me so that I could use the accessories. I took the mixer apart to find a stripped worm gear (the only non-metal gear). It was going to cost about $100 to get it fixed. I ordered the part and did the job myself [...]. It works great now!

"The last mixer you will ever buy" 2005-10-04
By Joseph Tidline (Phoenix, AZ USA)
I have owned my KitchenAid stand mixer for over 8 years and have had no problems with it whatsoever. This mixer is so great. I use whenever I can. It actually makes baking fun. Years ago I used to use my moms old Sunbeam mixer and whenever I tired to make a recipe that had a batter that was very thick it would slow the mixer down and sometimes it would stop on me. Not with the KitchenAid. I have had no slowdowns whatsoever. Even with the thickest dough and batters the KitchenAid never gives me any trouble. This is an appliance that you can leave on your countertop all the time because it looks great and you can pretty much get it in any color you want to match your kitchen. So, if you are in the market for a stand mixer and want to get your moneys worth then look no further. This is the mixer for you.

"Owned for about 6 years, recommend more power" 2005-04-06
By J. Hubbard (Springfield, OR)
I've had mine for about 6 years and no trouble so far. If I had to do it all over again, I would have gotten a 400 or 500 watt model however. At 300, this is fine for making dough or light - medium mixing but I tried one time to mix a batch of meatloaf consisting of about 2lb of ground beef. I was using the flat beater as the manual indicates but it sounded like it was really straining. I won't try that again.

The quality of the mixer is great and it's very sturdy. My advice is to really think about what the flat beater will be pushing around in the bowl though before choosing this particular model. The dough hook isn't really an issue since it has a lot less surface area.

 "Can't live without it!" 2009-04-11
By Linda S (Woodhaven, NY)
Wish I had this mixer 20 years ago. After researching stand mixers, I bought my KitchenAid 2 years ago and absolutely love it. It's so easy to use and clean and well worth the price. It's powerful enough for all my cookie and bread dough recipes. I don't know how I ever made all those Christmas cookies without it?

 "Disapointed" 2008-11-29
By Scott Jensen (Tulsa, Ok)
Was so excited to finally have a real mixer! And it has been wonderful, I really have loved it for mixing. After the first year the black knob on the front just split apart and fell off! We have now owned our mixer for about 4 years, light use only. Last month the beaters quit running, I would guess the gears are plastic and stripped. Not sure what to do now? Maybe they are all made with plastic parts inside, or maybe the artisan is a better built machine? I'm sold on stand mixers, just not on kitchen aid!

"Pooped out after 4 years of use" 2008-01-01
By Anne E. Huber
I use a mixer pretty heavily..bread dough a few times a week and long brioche mixing cycles, in addition to the usual cakes and cookies. This mixer has worked pretty well, but this weekend it burned out on a batch of Massa Souada (portugese sweet bread). It went clunkity clunk and then quit turning on :-(.

I really expected to have this mixer for a long time, so I'm a little disappointed

"I bought this gem a couple of years ago" 2007-11-27
By W. Phillips (Wilds of Oklahoma)
and have been more than happy with it. It is, I think, the low end of the Kitchenaid mixers, much like the classic. But I also think, from all the reviews I have read that this one will out do and out last the pricier and admittedly prettier Artisian series. I am not an uber baker, so I cannot say how long this would last if I baked everyday. With a little care I think a long time. The directions are very clear about what speeds to use and what amount of specific flours that should be used to ensure that the motor can handle the work. I do make more bread now than I used to, the ease of letting the mixer knead for 10 minutes while I am free to do other things in the kitchen is wonderful. Also for those big holiday meals this takes the work out of everything from baking to mashing potatos. Highly recomended.

This is my pride of ownership equipment. There is not enough good I can say of recommendation. Worked super right out of box. Do not know why I did not acquire this unit many years ago. Is a treasure in the kitchen.

 "Fit for Purpose" 2009-07-01
By Burr Swisher (Chicago)
I think it is important to understand what you are buying here when you consider this purchase. I've used this mixer about a dozen times now since December 2008 and have always been pleased with the mixing results. I mix things like cookie doughs and puddings. These seem like typical uses. The speed adjustment is not clincally accurate but, it does increase in speed as the nob is turned. The outer part is plastic chrome but it cleans up fine. The bowl's method of attachment to the turner leaves something to be desired but it works. So, in short, if you're looking for a device to mix most things with, I think this will suit you well.

 "Excellent Mixer" 2009-06-21
By drsmommy (Oklahoma)
I bought this mixer in lieu of a Kitchen Aid, mainly due to its flexibility. This mixer easily snaps together for use and easily breaks down for storage in a deep kitchen drawer. It is also lightweight, making it quite portable, but built so that it doesn't move all over the counter when in use. As far as use goes, it whips cream into butter without any effort or supervision on my part in about 15 minutes. I love that the bowls lock onto the base and cannot be easily shifted when adding ingredients to a batter. Overall, I have been pleasantly surprised with this purchase. I did not anticipate that I would like it better than my old Kitchen Aid.

 "Great for light duty" 2009-02-22
By M. R. Henderson (Indianapolis, IN USA)
We purchased this model to see if we would use it enough to justify getting a more expensive model. The unit performs well and we do not intend to replace it with a more heavy duty model since we do not use it that often. The motor seems to have enough power that it never bogged down or slowed down when we used it. I would definitely recommend this for people who don't know if they need the higher priced models and just want to use a mixer every once in a while.
