 "Disappointed" 2009-01-18
By Mark in WI (Wisconsin)
We purchased our Sunbeam Heritage mixmaster to replace one my wife had received from her grandmother which after decades finally died. The new one lasted less than two years. We thought at first it was just the beaters so we ordered new ones (for about half the cost of a new mixer on sale...) and when they arrived we thought all was good. Not. The problem is inside the housing and I'm guessing it's a plastic gear that has broken or been stripped. Very disappointed.

 "have to return mine" 2007-09-01
By Lynn McCraw (Texas)
I requested this stand mixer as a Christmas Gift in Dec. 2006. They were back-ordered, so I didn't receive it until around February 2007. I have used it a total of 4 times. The first time, no prob. The second time, the motor was either off or on high. That's it: two speeds. I couldn't adjust the speed with the knob, no matter how hard I tried. I tried to call Customer Service, but they're conveniently closed on Saturdays, when most working women use their mixers. So, I put it away and forgot to call Customer Service again. I got it out again about a month later, and thought I'd give it one more shot. Tada! It amazingly worked! "It fixed itself!" I thought. Well, I got it out again today, and the motor or transmission or whatever is acting up again. So I've made myself a note to call Customer Service next week. Hopefully it can be fixed easily, because it looks really nice and I really want to be able to use it!!!

 "Looks pretty" 2009-09-29
By Kelly Davis
This is a very attractive mixer but I have found it to be very impractical and am looking to replace it. It does not have a true slow speed - it flings batter around so much at the lowest speed that my dog immediately comes running when I use it, licking his chops. The beaters are annoyingly difficult to eject, and the unit is heavier and more cumbersome than other mixers I have had. I find myself yearning for the old "vintage" turquoise GE hand mixer with a variable speed wheel on top. In fact, I may just get one from an antique dealer. I am frustrated to death with this thing.

 "Just one complaint" 2009-09-06
By E. Walt (Delaware)
I really like this mixer. It's attractive, compact and takes up little room on my counter, powerful, and seems like it will be long lasting. However, the beaters are rather difficult to eject. I'm used to a seperate eject button and having the beaters pop out, however with this one, you have to pull them out. I don't use a mixer all that often tho, so I can live with it since I like the other features.

 "New Sunbeam Mixer" 2009-03-17
By Lee Anderson (Texas)
Very nice and well designed. Like the storage stand which our old mixer did not have. Very strong and still easy to use. Too bad that our old beaters will not fit this new unit, but that's all right. Very good service from Amazon. It came in sooner than we expected. Very good.

 "Nice unit" 2008-12-27
By C. Bond (Northern Virginia)
I bought this primarily because of its color. I like its stand that gives it a stable place to sit. The photos make it look cordless, but it is not which suits me fine. It has worked well the few times I have used it. The beaters have really deep anchors and do not eject easily. Actually, they are a pain to eject. However, that is fairly minor since I generally only do that once per use. Maybe they will get easier over time. The speed control feels a bit pointed to eject the beaters and it hurts my thumb to press it so hard. It has worked like a champ in beating cakes and cookie batter for me. The ejection problem would not cause me to not purchase it again, but it did rank it down one star.

"Poor Performance, Does Not Hold Up" 2009-08-23
By J. Windham (Grand Cane, La USA)
I have now stripped the gears on two of these Heritage Mixmasters. I know, I know...I should have learned my leason on the first one. But I didn't.

Do not purchase this mixer!! While the price seems like a bargain, I guess the adage "you get what you pay for" is very true. This mixer will not hold up under heavier doughs! On this last mixer, I was mixing up a batch of stiff buttercream for a wedding cake. The motor was starting to get hot (which wasn't unusual, because the motor on this mixer runs hot all the time, even under light loads) and all of a sudden it gave a horrible grinding noise and the beaters seazed up and refused to turn anymore. ...the same exact thing that had happened on my first Mixmaster also.

I can't imagine that 350 watts isn't sufficiant to mix buttercream. I can only think that the plastic parts inside became heated and finally cracked and broke under the strain. Lousy craftsmanship! Doesn't anyone do all metal gears anymore?

This time, I'm going to invest a little money and possible buy a Kitchenaid. Maybe it will last longer than a year.

 "Plastic gears" 2009-08-15
By Jim & Jenny (Michigan)
We also bought the Sunbeam Mixmaster based on previous experience. It is unfortunate that the new products have sacrificed quality for cost. The drive gears for the beaters are now plastic and do not hold up to moderate load (Marshmallow Creme frosting??!??). I found that it stripped the teeth right off the head of the beater drive sleeve when I investigated. Of course I cannot find the parts to repair.

The wife and I are now going to go for quality instead of this low-cost alternative.

 "Piece of Junk" 2009-05-22
By Unsattisfied
I bought this mixure primarily for Dough recipes but it just simply won't handle that... If I put the mixer on high # 3 knead it shuts off after about 15 minutes of use. Additionally, the knob in the back has completely come loose so as the mixer is "mixing" the speed varies up and down so you have to tape it or keep re-adjusting. I just bought a Kitchen Aid Pro 6 series can't wait to get it!!! P.S. it has the most messed up dough hook out of all the mixers I've seen. Plus it is too light the the mixer moves around A LOT!

 "Don't buy this Mixer!" 2009-05-19
By Avid baker (New Jersey United States)
I bought this mixer because I had owned a Sunbeam stand mixer that worked like a champ for 21 years. It is obvious that the quality of Sunbeam's newer offerings is lacking. This mixer started to have problems after just one year of use. The motor would died out during mixing. Resetting the dial would get it to start up again, so I just dealt with it. However, now it is totally unusable as it is stuck and will not tilt back, so the beaters can not be inserted. I feel ripped off, because I thought I was buying a quality product, based on my past experience with Sunbeam!

"Have used this mixer for over a year..." 2009-01-01
By Country Girl (Pittsburgh, Pa, USA)
I purchased this mixer last year for one daughter, am going to buy another for the older daughter who returned a different one she got at Christmas. Have used it for lots of pie crust, cakes, cookies, mashed potatoes. It looks great on the counter if you want a retro look that we love. Very quiet, and have had no problems whatsoever with it.

 "Pretty but not practical" 2009-05-16
By K. Arner (Phoenix, AZ)
Well..I read the previous reviews and thought the mixer couldn't be all that bad. I paid attention to those who had bought the "plastic" mixers and how they weren't stable so I bought the die cast metal. The price was right,it had all the features and size bowl I wanted, and it looks so nice so i thought I'd try it. Well....I used it twice and sadly to say, it's going back to the store.

The first time I made a batch of oatmeal cookies. Creaming the ingredients was fine, but as soon as I got the flour and oatmeal in the mix, the mixer and bowl started rocking and jerking as the mix hit the beaters. Decided I can't turn away from that for a second! The second time was a coffee cake batter, smooth & creamy and no rocking this time, but the bowl wouldn't spin to mix the batter. Plus then I started to get the overheated motor smell.

Not sure what I'll get now cause I really don't want to spend $200+ on a mixer, but this one wasn't it.

"Only good for mixing a cake!" 2009-03-24
By David R. George (Perry, Georgia United States)
This is a honey if all you want to do is make a simple cake mix. I tried creaming butter and sugar and all it does is sling everything to the sides! Thank goodness I had just bought a Kitchenaid hand mixer, I finished up my cookie dough with that and it handled that with ease! Don't bother with this one, save up for a Kitchenaid stand mixer, that's what I'm going to do!!

 "What a disappointment" 2009-03-20
By Val (Mount Juliet, TN)
Purchased this mixer at a close out retail store for just under seventy dollars. It was brand new, not a refurbished unit. I thought even if it lasts only a year at this price, it would be a good deal. I was wrong.

The unit came well packaged, with all of the included accessories. Two stainless mixing bowls, and two sets of hooks - one dough hook set, and set of regular beaters. The chassis is all metal while the stand upon which the bowls rest is chrome painted plastic. The unit is heavy but not so heavy it can't be manuevered easily. So far so good.....

I used this machine ONE TIME, after which the bowl plate stopped spinning. I did not say I used it for one recipe, I mean, I used it ONE TIME, and the plate stopped working. I tried to make a very light weight egg dough. I only got through step 1, of making the sponge. 1c. flour, 2 pkgs yeast, one cup warm milk, 1/2 cup sugar. That WAS IT. Not a heavy load, not a lot of volume. The unit did not heat up and smell. The unit did not give any indication that the plate would stop working. When I got to step 2, combine 2 egg yolks, 1/4 c. milk, 1/2 c. melted shortening, and 2 cups more flour, I turned on the machine to finish mixing and the bottom plate did not move at all. I finished the recipe by manually moving the bowl around and around (that's how light the recipe was).

I then set about troubleshooting the unit. I tried to use the smaller bowl, the other hooks, with no luck. Smaller bowl, same hoooks, no dice. I tried turning on the machine with nothing on it, or in it. Nothing doing. I am EXTREMELY DISAPPOINTED. This is going right back to the store. I will spend a little more on a mixer that is rated more highly. DO NOT BUY THIS UNIT!!!

 "Will not last" 2008-06-01
By Z. Fekete (NH)
I bought this mixer about 1 years ago. It LOOKS reliable , heavy, with a lot of steel built into it. It is everything but reliable. Built to last till the end of the warranty period, not a day longer. All that steel is to make sure no-one will be able to take it apart to fix it, or to see that the internal power transmission parts are made from cheap plastic.

 "Dead in 5 rounds!" 2009-07-22
By Steve Hryniuk (Hilo, Hawaii)
I bought this as a (requested) gift for girlfriend's birthday. It did well with cookies, it did well with bread dough, and well with various batters. But died in only 5 uses! White smoke of death escaped the motor housing tonight and I'm really sad to tell her what happened tomorrow when she wakes up.

I purchased mine from WM and it was on sale for less than a hundred. Deal was great then, sour now.

I would recommend against the Sunbeam cheapies (and all cheapies for that matter) and am looking to higher power / well reviewed models now. Amazon is the greatest!

 "Not so Great" 2009-06-19
By X
Had it a year, it worked ok. But now, a screw has worked loose from the top part, and it prevents the head from tilting back. Total dis-assembly is required to fix this.

There is no excuse for a screw working loose! Bolt it, rivet it, pin it, or Loctite it! I'm handy, so I'll fix it, but anyone else would have to trash it.

The motor is beginning to smell as well. Can't recomend this machine, it dosen't last.

 "Just like old times!" 2009-03-24
By T. Garwood (Glassboro, NJ United States)
This mixer is the greatest. Had a Mixmaster from Sunbeam years ago and it lasted many years. When it finally gave out, everyone said to get a Kitchenade. We did and never did get used to it. After only a few years, but with a lot of use, it started to leak oil and sounded very bad. We wanted to try and go back to a Sunbeam. We looked at all the models and decided to get the better model with dual motors. It has been fantastic! Great mixing action, plenty of power and very familier to use. We're glad we went back to a Sunbeam.

 "piece of crap" 2008-12-04
By Jennifer Barr (PA United States)
I always thought Sunbeam was a great brand...that is, until I bought this mixer! Right from the get go it would over heat and smell like something was burning. I thought it had caught fire at one point because it was smoking!!! It quit working but then after it would cool down it would work again for maybe 10 minutes each interval. It died completely and had only lasted me a year and that was not even using it more then once every other month or so! It was a complete waste of money. I guess now days nothing is made to last like it used to be.
